Uncoventional Hydrocarbon Resources

What are “Unconventional Hydrocarbon Resources” and how do they different from Conventional HC resources?

Unconventional hydrocarbons are found in very tight, impermeable rock formations where the hydrocarbons would not naturally flow from the rocks into a well bore using the standard (or Conventional) practices currently used in oil and gas production. Techniques such as drilling horizontal wells and hydraulic fracturing (or “fracking”) are employed to be able to access these hydrocarbons and help them flow at commercial rates from the rocks, into the borehole and ultimately to the surface where they are gathered and processed in much the same way as in conventional oil and gas field. Typically, even utilizing these technologies, Unconventional wells produce a lot less hydrocarbons than their Conventional counterparts. Hence in an Unconventional Development many more wells need drilling (often several thousand) and the emphasis is on quickly and efficiently drilling cheap wells to ensure commerciality of the project.

Where can they be Found in Abu Dhabi?

Because of the huge number of cheap wells that are needed to be drilled in an UHR development project only Onshore areas are currently considered commercially viable at this moment in time. Initial screening studies of the Unconventional HC potential in Abu Dhabi suggests the most prospective intervals are in the rich Mesozoic source rock intervals (such as the Shilaif and Diyab formations) where they have been buried deep enough for hydrocarbons to be generated in sufficient quantities. Several such areas have been identified in Abu Dhabi and future exploration and appraisal wells will target these areas to determine if the conditions are right for the subsequent development of these Unconventional Resources.

About ADNOC Unconventional Hydrocarbon Resource Team (UHR):

Mission Statement

Utilizing global best-practices and expertise, quantify the Unconventional Hydrocarbon resource potential of Abu Dhabi and facilitate their subsequent development with the aspiration to deliver 100,000 boed production from Unconventional reservoirs by 2030.

Vision Statement

In 5-years: complete and extensive Unconventional exploration program to quantify the resource potential. Reach a ration decision based on the exploration data gathered and high quality technical evaluation on whether to pursue subsequent appraisal of the UHR.

In 10 years: Complete an aggressive appraisal campaign and initiate pilot development projects in the most promising areas for potential development. Facilitate rapid and cost-efficient project execution through establishing long-term relationships with best-in-class International Unconventional operators.

In 20 years: Establish a sustainable production of Unconventional hydrocarbons in excess of 100,000 boed with an international reputation for low cost, high efficiency operations based on successful long-term relationships with IOC’s and a highly competent and motivated local workforce.
